When the war first began, the North was fighting to save the Union. Read the quote below that Lincoln wrote explaining his dilemma.
Slavery: Lincoln’s Dilemma
“My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union.”
– Abraham Lincoln, in a letter to Horace Greeley August 22, 1862

Listen to your teacher to answer more exciting facts about the Civil War. Since I can't blab to you at this current time, I wrote most of the answers in for you. Copy the answers onto your paper.
s93. Who was John McLean? The Southern army took over his house and used it as their headquarters at Bull Run. He wanted to get his family away from the war, so he moved to Appomattax Courthouse. At the end of the war, his house at Appomattax was used to sign the treaty between the North and the South. Technically, the Civil War started and ended at his home.
94. How many people died in the Civil War? Over 600,000 people died in during the Civil War.
95. What is the purpose Arlington Cemetery? Arlington Cemetery is the national cemetery for the United States military.
96. Who once owned the land at Arlington Cemetery? This was General Robert E. Lee's plantation. He was not tried for treason against the United States, but he did get his plantation taken away.
97. What is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier? The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a memorial to all of the American soldiers that died in war, but were unrecognizable after their death. They could not be identified and sent home to their families. (This was before DNA testing.)
98. Describe two things that soldiers must do in order to guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. There are a lot of answers. Click here to scan over some of the requirements. You don't need to write them down.
99. Who shot Abraham Lincoln? John Wilkes Booth shot Abraham Lincoln. He wanted to keep the Civil War going.
100. What day, month and year did Lincoln die? Lincoln was shot April 15, 1865.
101. In your opinion, what made Lincoln a great president? In my opinion, Lincoln was a great president for several reasons. 1 - He retaught Americans the importance of the Declaration of Independence. 2 - He was honest. 3 - He was determined to free the slaves. 4 - He was forgiving. He forgave the South after the Civil War.
102. Why did Lincoln want the United States to forgive the South? Lincoln did not want to give the South a reason to seek revenge against the North. Since the North forgave the South, there was no reason to attack or get even with the North for any harsh treatment. The North welcomed the South back and forgave all of the Southern leaders. None of the leaders were tried for treason. Which is absolutely shocking to me!
103. Do you agree with Lincoln or do you think the North should have punished the South and all of the people that committed treason against the United States? Explain your answer. You don't need to answer this.
104. What were the main causes of the Civil War? In my opinion, the main cause of the Civil War was slavery. Many Southerns today would argue it was a war over state rights. I disagree with this. The Confederate Constitution was an exact copy of the United States Constitution. The only topic that was changed in the Confederate Constitution was slavery. Slavery was made legal, and people could be declared as property. If this was a war about state rights, then why did the South not change that section in our Constitution? In my view, the South never really understood the Declaration of Independence or the purpose of it. Since they didn't understand our "why", they willingly clung to old European views of aristocracy/oligarchy; a few in charge with all the power and money, that controlled a very large poor class and slaves.
105. Using the Civil War as an example, why should you solve a problem when it’s small?
106. Do you have the responsibility to correct individual beliefs. Explain and justify your answer with an example from your life or an example from history.
